Apple Inc. said its HomePod smart speaker will be available for sale online Friday and hit stores on Feb. 9, after being delayed from December. The $349, Siri-controlled device was originally announced last June and marks the iPhone maker’s first foray into smart-home hardware. The speaker is designed to be a bulwark in Apple users’ homes, serving as a gadget to stream Apple Music, get weather information and control such accessories as lights, door locks and curtains. It can also serve as a speakerphone for iPhone calls, Apple said Tuesday. Later this year, a software update will let users play music throughout the house with multi-room audio. A Facebook engineer has invented a new unit of time called a flick. The flick has been designed to help developers keep video effects in sync, according to a description on the code-sharing site GitHub. A flick, derived from "frame-tick", is 1/705,600,000 of a second - the next unit of time after a nanosecond. Booming interest in crypto-currencies has been blamed for pushing up the prices of graphics cards. The cards are popular because they speed up the process of minting or "mining" crypto-coins. In a move that could revolutionise the way we buy groceries, Amazon opens its first supermarket without checkouts - human or self-service - to shoppers on Monday. Amazon Go, in Seattle, has been tested by staff for the past year. It uses hundreds of ceiling-mounted cameras and electronic sensors to identify each customer and track what items they select. Uber co-founder Travis Kalanick will become a billionaire, after investors agreed to take a large stake in the ride-hailing firm. A consortium led by Japan's Softbank is buying a chunk of the company from existing shareholders as well as new Uber shares in a $9.3bn (£6.7bn) deal. Google has released a fix for a bug in Chromecast and Android devices which could temporarily knock out home wi-fi networks. The problem emerges when Chromecast and Google Home devices wake from their low power "sleep" state. Apple Inc. stock analysts headed in opposite directions, with the tech giant picking up a rare downgrade on the same day it got a new target price that exceeded all others on Wall Street. While Longbow Research analyst Shawn Harrison cut the stock to neutral on Wednesday, Bank of America Merrill Lynch analyst Wamsi Mohan raised his target price to $220 from $180. That’s the highest target price among analysts surveyed by Bloomberg. The shares slipped 0.1 percent in early trading to $176.05. Alphabet Inc.’s Google is introducing a new product that lets data-center customers tap the search engine’s artificial-intelligence arsenal, part of the company’s effort to stand out in the competitive cloud-computing market. Uber Technologies Inc. will begin limiting the time U.K. drivers can spend on the road to 10 hours a day, responding to regulatory health concerns about tiredness and exhaustion. Hackers have stolen $400,000 (£290,000) of the virtual currency Stellar Lumen in an online attack on Saturday. Twitter will now display messages to inform users if blocked tweets were withheld to comply with local laws or court orders, which it calls Country Withheld Content (CWC). The $40 million Ripcord Series B we reported back in August has just been bumped up to $65 million, courtesy of additional funding led by Google Ventures. The added funding comes as the record keeping company continues to grow at a healthy clip. The Bay Area based service added 100 jobs this year, and is on track to add another 150 in 2018. The service came out of stealth in March of this year, when it announced that it had raised a $9.5 million Series A. The U.S. Government has officially blamed North Korea for WannaCry, the massive ransomware attacked that spread across the world disrupting more than 200,000 businesses from 35 countries this past May. Twitter today says it will begin to enforce new rules related to how it handles hateful conduct and abusive behavior taking place on its platform. The changes are a part of the company’s broader agenda to craft new policies focused on reducing the amount of abuse, hate speech, violence and harassment. Thousands of Vodafone customers will be able to end their contracts early after the UK's communications regulator raised concerns over new charges. China is using fake LinkedIn profiles to gather information on German officials and politicians, the German intelligence agency (BfV) has said. The agency alleges that Chinese intelligence used the networking site to target at least 10,000 Germans, possibly to recruit them as informants. Bitcoin futures trading on CBOE, the world’s largest futures exchange, just launched at 5pm CT. Within a minute of the launch bitcoin spiked about 10% from ~$14,700 all the way up to $16,200 before settling a few minutes later to around $15,500, up about 5%. Elon Musk's infrastructure firm, the Boring Company, will compete to build a new transport link in Chicago. Mayor Rahm Emanuel is exploring options for a high-speed link between O'Hare Airport and the city centre, and is considering an underground link. Facebook has temporarily turned off a system that let advertisers choose which ethnic and minority groups saw their ads. It said it would investigate how the feature was being used by advertisers. News organisation ProPublica discovered that the system could be abused by posting discriminatory ads on the social network.
