🗂 Sometimes you're staying at home or any other place where no one can see you for whatever reasons. You can say "I've been hiding from people for 3 days", nothing bad about saying it like this. There may be moments, however, when it is the flavor of informality that you need, not "to hide from the world". This is a perfect occasion to use this phrasal verb:
TO HOLE UP
It works both as an intransitive (without an object) and transitive verb:
Intransitive:
Hurry, we need to hole up somewhere and wait out the storm.
Bears are hole up in winter.
Transitive:
Her job is a life-consuming process that can hole her up for as much as six months.
We need to round up a search party, go down into the town, bring back any survivors, and hole them up here.
