So, the book never states explicitly that Christianity is bad. The book doesn't take a stance on the merits or demerits of Christianity, or any religion, at all.
(Gilead the society does punish those who choose to continue to practice other religions with death - they hang them off of a wall with bags over their heads depicting their crime to serve as an example to anyone who might try to oppose the government in any way.)
However, the oppressors use religion as a means of justification for what they're doing. They cherry-pick and even change verses of the Bible to fit their agenda.
And their agenda is to do as much as they can to dehumanize and oppress women.
The book was written in the 80s as a protest to legislation written by the US government trying to dictate what women could and couldn't do with their own bodies without input from women.
But, no. The author doesn't try to make Christian America look oppressive. She just creates a society in which verses of the Bible are taken out of context and even change to fit the agenda of the society.
